Origins

Contemporary sea kayaks trace their origin to the native boats of Alaska, northern Canada, and Southwest Greenland. Eskimo hunters developed a fast sea going craft to hunt seals and walrus. The ancient Aleut name for a sea kayak is Iqyak, and earliest models were constructed from a light wooden frame (tied together with sinew or baleen) and covered with sea mammal (sea lion or seal) hides. Archaeologists have found evidence indicating that kayaks are at least 4000 years old. Wooden kayaks and fabric kayaks on wooden frames (such as the Klepper) were dominating the market up until 1950s, when fiberglass boats were first introduced. Rotomolded plastic kayaks first appeared in 1984.

Elounda - Spina Loga island 13km

The island of Spinalonga, officially known as Kalydon, is located in the gulf of Elounda in north-eastern Crete, in Lasithi prefecture, next to the town of Elounda. The island has been used as a leper colony. Spinalonga has appeared in novels, television series, and a short film. In this sea kayak trip we will explore the whole area in a superb nature!

Seven days trip and course

Crete is one of the world's best sea kayaking/hiking locations, according to the National Geographic (check here their article).  This is a great opportunity to inlude an excellent experience of sea kayaking into your holiday.  A globaly recognised sea kayak certification from the British Canoe Union.

Faneromeni Dam

This is a daily trip to Faneromeni lake. Faneromeni dam is located in Iraklio prefecture. Its major purpose is the irrigation of 20 km2. Faneromeni dam is an earth dam with water reservoir capacity of 17.000.000 c.m. The length of the dam is 484m on the crest, 76m height, and 8m width on the top. The construction also includes a side overflow, by-pass and intake works, access roads, water supply, electromechanical works including procurement and installation of the dam operation and control instrumentation. The period of construction was 1999-2003.
