Eastern Crete Day Trips
Eastern Crete with its towering cliffs, sea caves, remote beaches, and deep turquoise waters create a great paddling environment. But make no mistake—this is not a region for casual or beginner kayakers. The eastern coast, particularly from Plaka (near Elounda) to Pachia Ammos, becomes one of the windiest areas in all of Europe during July and August, making it a challenging environment suitable only for highly experienced paddlers.
Overview of the trip
Depending on the weather and group level, trips may launch from the following spots, all within easy reach of Agios Nikolaos.
- Plaka / Elounda area
- Agios Nikolaos
- Pachia Ammos
- Kalo Chorio / Istron
- Tholos beach (towards Siteia)
We choose the route one day before, based on weather and sea conditions.
Each route ranges from 12 km up to 18 km, with all trips running from 10:00 AM to approximately 4:00 PM. The day includes regular breaks, beach stops for swimming or snorkeling, and time for a relaxed lunch. While the distance may seem moderate, the exposure, wind state, and heat make each trip physically and mentally demanding. These routes are only confirmed a day or two in advance.
Our sea kayaking trips in this region are designed for those who are confident in rough conditions, have excellent boat control, and are comfortable paddling in strong winds and occasionally strong rebound off cliffs. The Meltemi winds dominate the summer months and can pick up rapidly, making weather assessment and timing critical. For this reason, routes and launch points are chosen daily based on the forecast—adaptability is part of the experience.
Among the highlights of these routes is the chance to paddle past Spinalonga, the historic Venetian fortress island that later became Greece’s most well-known leper colony. The island’s haunting presence and fortified walls rising from the sea make for a powerful visual experience, especially from the water. We may paddle past it or land for a brief visit—only if sea conditions allow.

Locations like Kalo Chorio, Tholos, Voulisma, and Pachia Ammos are all part of our paddling area. Some routes are exposed and demand sustained effort in headwinds or crosswinds, while others provide temporary shelter and allow us to explore at a slower pace.
Because of the windy summer conditions, we have a strict experience requirement for anyone joining during July to September. You must be able to perform assisted rescues, paddle in force 5 gusts, and maintain control in choppy or rebounding seas. We want to be clear: these trips are tailored for seasoned kayakers, not recreational paddlers.
All trips are personally guided by Stelios, founder of Enjoy-Crete and a sea kayaking specialist with unmatched experience in the region. With over 200+ guided day trips in eastern Crete, Stelios knows every cove, wind pattern, and weather pattern along this coastline. His local expertise is not only on the water—he is also the first and only person in Greece to design and build composite sea kayaks from scratch, with his own model named Nireas. This deep technical knowledge of kayak performance and design adds a unique layer of safety and understanding to every trip.

Do you run this trip all year long?
Yes, the trip can be arranged all year for groups of at least four participants.
Is there a limitation on weight?
Yes, the weight limit depends on the kayak type:
Single Kayaks
- ✅ Recommended up to 105 kg
- ⚠️ Up to 110 kg possible for experienced paddlers
- ❗ Stability is significantly reduced above 105 kg
Tandem (Double) Kayaks
- ✅ Can accommodate paddlers up to 115 kg
- ⚠️ Cockpit design often becomes uncomfortable above 105 kg
If your weight exceeds 105 kg, a trial may be required. In some cases, paddling may be impractical due to restricted legroom and stability limitations.
Note:
I have been designing and building sea kayaks for several years. My custom kayak brand, 3kymia, reflects this experience.
