Sfakia – Loutro Sea Kayak Trip
This is our most popular sea kayaking day trip, taking place in one of the most sheltered coastal areas of Crete, near the famous Samaria Gorge. No prior kayaking experience is necessary. The trip starts at Ilingas Beach, located about an hour’s drive from Chania, making it ideal for those staying in western Crete or near Rethymno.
Along the route, you’ll explore impressive sea caves, towering cliffs, and pristine beaches accessible only by water. The scenery is stunning, and on many trips, we’re lucky to spot griffon vultures soaring above the cliffs.
We also often encounter the Caretta caretta (loggerhead sea turtle), a symbolic species of the Mediterranean. Greece is home to about 60% of all loggerhead nesting activity in the region.
Your guide, Stelios, is not only an experienced sea kayaking instructor but also a skilled kayak designer, having built custom composite sea kayaks under the 3kymia brand for several years.
This ensures our equipment is not only top-quality, but designed with real paddler needs in mind.
Overview of the Trip
Paddling distance: We’ll paddle approximately 14 km, with plenty of time to stop for swimming and snorkeling at beautiful beaches only accessible by sea. Experienced paddlers are welcome to join solo; if you’re new to kayaking, we recommend sharing a double kayak for added stability. All necessary paddling gear is provided, and the trip is suitable for most fitness levels.
Equipment: We mainly use composite kayaks on this trip. If you’re not comfortable in a narrow single kayak, double kayaks are available. People with no experience will begin in a tandem kayak, and those who are able to paddle solo may request a single. We also offer premium kayaks from Nigel Dennis, Valley and North Shore, upon request.
Plan of the trip: After a short introduction for beginners, we’ll paddle along the stunning south coast of Crete. We’ll visit sea caves, hidden coves, and beautiful beaches ideal for swimming and snorkeling. There will be time to relax and enjoy the scenery, and we’ll stop for lunch at a traditional seaside taverna (not included in the price).
The return paddle will follow the same coastal route, giving us a second chance to enjoy the incredible landscape.
If you’re part of an experienced group, we’re happy to extend the trip to cover longer distances, reaching up to 18-20 km, conditions permitting.

How do I book?
Please use the “Reserve your spot” button at the top of this page to access our booking form or click this link.
After submitting the form, you will receive a confirmation email within 1–2 days (often the same day).
Payment Options
- Cash: Pay on the day of the trip
- Credit Card: Pay online during checkout. Card payment is not possible on site, and the booking is not confirmed until the online payment is completed.
This is necessary because there is very limited mobile signal and no reliable internet connection on the beach. I also don’t have an office there—only a kayak rack—and I usually have wet hands, making card payments impractical on site.
Please also review our booking terms and refund policy, available in the footer of every page.
What time do we meet & finish?
- Start: 10:00 AM
- Finish: Between 4:00–5:00 PM
Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via email.
Please arrive at the beach a few minutes before the starting time.
Do you provide transfer?
❌ Transfers are not available for this trip.
You will need to meet us directly at Ilingas Beach.
If you are traveling by bus from Chania, you will arrive in time for the start of the activity.
Can we stay in Loutro and start the sea kayaking from there?
- Loutro isn’t a suitable starting point for any of our sea kayaking trips because there are no roads—so we can’t transfer the kayaks there to begin the tour.
- To access the tour easily, please overnight in Chora Sfakion or at Ilingas Hotel (which is exactly where we’re located).
Do you run this trip all year long?
Yes, the trip can be arranged all year for groups of at least four participants.
For smaller groups, the trip is available from April to October only.
Is there a limitation on weight?
Yes, the weight limit depends on the kayak type:
Single Kayaks
- ✅ Recommended up to 105 kg
Tandem (Double) Kayaks
- ✅ Can accommodate paddlers up to 105–107 kg
- ⚠️ Cockpit design often does not comfortably fit paddlers over 105 kg
If your weight exceeds 105 kg, a trial may be required. In some cases, paddling may be impractical or uncomfortable due to restricted legroom and stability limitations.
