Chania Region: What You Need to Know About Sea Kayaking

The Chania region in Crete offers diverse sea kayaking opportunities, split into three main areas: the west, north, and south. The northwestern coast is often the most exposed to wind and swell, while the southern part is typically the calmest and most scenic.

Why Choose the South Coast?

The southern coastline — especially the area around Sfakia — is one of the most spectacular places to paddle in all of Greece.
Expect:

  • Towering cliffs
  • Hidden sea caves
  • Crystal-clear turquoise waters
  • Remote beaches
  • Wild, untouched coastline

It’s a true sea kayaking paradise.

In contrast, the coastline around Chania city offers little for kayakers, aside from the beautiful Venetian harbor.
The far northwest near Gramvousa Island is worth exploring — but only on very calm days due to swell and summer winds.

Kayak in the Heart of Nature

A large section of the south coast lies within the Samaria National Park, which makes it incredibly wild and quiet.
From Ilingas Beach, near the village of Chora Sfakion, you can paddle many kilometers without seeing a single road.

The night sky here is outstanding — perfect for astrophotography.
