Getting Around Crete by Public Transport

Getting Around Crete by Public Transport

Traveling around Crete by public bus is surprisingly easy — and in many cases, buses are frequent, reliable, clean, and cheap.
This guide will help you understand how to move efficiently between major towns, airports, and coastal regions using Crete’s public transport network.

Crete has four main intercity bus stations, each operated by a different branch of KTEL:

  • Heraklion (Iraklio)
  • Chania
  • Rethymno
  • Agios Nikolaos

Each region runs its own routes and schedules, but most coastal towns are well connected.

🚌 Main Bus Connections

Chania ↔ Rethymno ↔ Heraklion

The north-coast route is the busiest on the island.
Buses run:

  • Every 30–60 minutes between Chania and Rethymno
  • Every hour between Rethymno and Heraklion

This is the most reliable and fastest public transport corridor in Crete.

🚌 Heraklion Airport → Heraklion City

A bus runs every 10–20 minutes from Heraklion Airport to the central bus station (KTEL).
Travel time: ~20 minutes

  • Plakias
  • Agia Galini
  • Spili
  • Preveli
  • Triopetra
  • Kokkinos Pirgos

Service to these areas is less frequent than the north coast but still reliable during summer.

  • Ierapetra
  • Small coastal villages along Mirabello Bay

Frequency varies — expect fewer departures in winter.
